Perfect bound/ binding is generally seen as a more attractive method than saddle-stitching for products over 6mm thick. It is ideal for magazines, booklets, short life books and, if the correct material and procedures are used, quite thick medium-life products such as annual catalogues. Paper choice is vital to producing a well-bound perfect bound product.
Perfect Bound/Books Binding is a method of producing books, booklets or magazines, made up by placing folded sections on top of each other in the correct page order. The spines are sawn off, roughened and notches cut into the spine to allow the glue to create a better bond with the paper. The covers are then drawn on, scored on the machine and trimmed on three edges.
You can calculate the width of the back in mm for the catalogue with the following formular:
Number of pages insides: 2 * grammage of paper : 1000 = rounded up .5
Exaple for 128 pages inside and 135g paper:
128 : 2 * 135 : 1000 = 8.64 mm = 9 mm
